What an extreme month of weather we’ve just witnessed in eastern Australia!
From record high temperatures and catastrophic bushfires, to the gigantic force of tropical cyclone Oswald, which left record rainfall and flooding, and a trail of devastation all the way from the Gulf of Carpentaria to the coast of New South Wales. The impact and memories of this month will surely be long lasting after the destruction of property and very sadly the tragic loss of lives.
Here in Sydney events were tame in comparison to places further north. As the remnants of ex-TC Oswald passed over, the city folks just had another chance to complain about the rain and traffic chaos. For most, some inconvenience, something to talk about, and certainly making for a fun last day of school holidays for kids along the beaches.
The big seas drew me to spend a few hours with the camera in the eastern suburbs. Despite my keeping a very safe distance I have to admit getting soaked and somehow came home with an ear full of water – hmmmm. And, what’s more, I really did see a ‘drowned rat’ at Coogee!
Some fun and interest, yes; but let’s not forget the serious challenges that lie ahead for thousands of families in recovering from these disasters.
Here’s a small collection of photos from my short outing in the wild conditions between Bronte and Maroubra.
Bronte Baths resembled an overly-frothed cappuccino!

One drenching too many! (Bronte)
